The New Highway (Tune - I'm Getting Married in the Morning: My Fair Lady)

You all know by now that the City Council has decided that rather than having more university students living just down the road from here they will build a highway through Oriental Studies. This was a direct action resulting from the annual meeting of The Public Parks, Gardens, Thoroughfares and Highways Preservation and Extension Society at which we were present due to mistaking it for the Protest Against Sending Australian Troops to Vietnam. This is an almost verbatim report of the leader's speech entitled Our New Northern Highway. We want to build a great new highway Up the northern end of town We want to have it made Crossing Royal Parade Through land belonging to the Crown We want to keep our parks and gardens For this we have no apologies Start up a precedence Down with Halls of Residence Run it through the Uni colleges Before they start their plans we'll cosh Remember how we went and stopped their Prosh We want increased city access But where can we put our new by-pass Tread on the Uni's toes Oriental Studies goes Stop the growth of International House We're going to keep our parks and gardens And have our roads and highways too They don't need tennis courts To hell with all their sports What have uni students done for you They're lazy slobs; no civic thoughts Twill be another place for wild rorts No! Un-i-ver-si-tit-tit-tit-ty students To us aren't as valuable as trees We don't care if It puts up their tariff And increases all their fees Knock down their plans for new extensions No matter how their hope is slowed They've got a bloody nerve Wanting us to observe Their right to land whereon we want OUR ROAD
