Sometimes I feel like a curry that’s mild ...
Sometimes a hamburger will do
But when I’m really hungry the thought that drives me wild
Is of great big bowls of thick, hot Irish stew
It’s got ’taties; it’s got onions; it’s got lamb chops on the bone
It’s got carrots (if you’re lucky), and a flavour all its own
It’s got salt and pepper in it
But it has no need for flour
I could eat some right this minute
I could eat it by the hour

Without it what would Irish men and women do?
They’d go crackers; they’d go crazy; they would go extremely odd
They would rant and rave and curse and vilify their God

So all you pious Christians with your bowls of weak thin gruel
Which you offer to the hungry, how could you be so cruel?
When somebody is starving there’s just one thing that will do
And that’s a bowl that’s flowing o’er with thick hot Irish stew
The recipe is simple: just take everything you’ve got
And chop it into great big chunks and throw it in a pot
The longer it can simmerThere the better it will get
I started one last summerAnd that stew sustains me yet

Without it what would Irish men and women do?
They’d go batty; they’d go bonkers. They’d go right around the bend
They would tear great chunks of hair out, sobbing 'Where will it all end?'

Now other countries hide behind the name of a Ragout
A concoction that’s a travesty of a decent sort of stew
And a Stroganoff or Goulash is another foreign scam
You might as well eat Succotash, or Bully Beef, or Spam
(Spam, spam, spam, spam.  Spam, spam, spam, ...)
The English stick to Casseroles and things they call Hot-pots
And they’d never touch a Haggis which is quite obscene and Scots
The Froggies have a national dishThey call a Pot-au-fer
At least the Irish skin theirsBefore they start to stir

They’d go loopy; they’d go loco; and their screws would all come loose
They would jump off little boxes with their heads stuck through a noose

So if such deprivation drives these people round the twist
Profit from their example
Go out and get a sample
I really do insist
You must try some
Beg or buy some
Or you’ll not know what you’ve missed
