Foreign Languages

Another way for compilers to specify groups of letters which are not English words, is to invoke other languages. You are not expected to be fluent in any, but the commonly known words for ‘the’, ‘and’ ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’, ‘when’, etc, are considered fair game. ‘The French hail Latin and Welsh (5)’ for ‘leave’ = le+ave. Sometimes the reference is more disguised: ‘“Parisian,” is one friend’s judgement (8)’ for ‘estimate’ = est+i+mate. A Parisian would say ‘est’ for ‘is’. And sometimes even more: ‘“Nice one!” I cried, “Is (censored) matchless!” (10)’ for ‘unequalled’ = une {i s}qualled. In this case Nice refers to the French city.
