The Queue
Some times I get in a rush and a bustle, and I really don't know why
I know that I've got plenty of time
There's no great mountains I have to climb
But a voice deep inside of me always starts to cry:
'Hurry up! Gangway! Can't you see it's getting late
Come on snail get out of my way, I can't afford to wait
I want to press on so move that crate
I'm sick of being in a queue
Can't you press that gas pedal harder?
Oh why did God create such a slow moving creature as you?'
Well I got past him, and the road was clear for about a minute or two
So I gunned the motor and sped along until I ran into
The back of this queue that I'm in here
(I think it formed this time last year)
And all the time that little voice is screaming what to do:
'Hurry up! You're slow! Why don't you barge right past?
Smash your hand down on the horn and give them a big blast
Form another lane and drive real fast
Don't let these mongrels block your way
You need to show a little more "oomph"
Not sit here like Buddha gazing at your navel all day'
Now I guess I could have listened, and tried to bullock through
But a saner voice in a calmer tone
Said, 'Whoa there! Hang up that phone
You don't have to follow the orders of all who shout at you
So slow down. Take time. Why not enjoy the view?
There's nothing that important that you really have to do
So smell the flowers; watch the cockatoo
Hear the magpie's melody
Resting here without any worries
Is probably the best place that you could ever hope to be'
I must admit that sounded like pretty good advice to try
So I dropped my hands, sat back in my chair
Gave a great big sigh and breathed the air
And gazed at the view which looked so fair
That when the queue started moving I just didn't care...
(Spoken)
But the guy behind me did! He started leaning on his horn, and hollering out of his window about...
(Singing)
Dozy bastards who wouldn't know which end was up, and why didn't I go?
So I put the car in gear real slow
And inched my way along the road ten feet
To make that long long line of cars complete
As I listened to my new voice sing a calming lullaby
'No hurry. Stay calm. Life is far too short
To spend it racing recklessly like some demented sport
The whole world offers you support
So cherish everything you do
Living as if there's no tomorrow
Is the best way to ensure that your life belongs to you
Staying aware while being mellow
Is the best way to ensure that your life belongs to you'
