The Labours of Herakles (Hercules)
Zeus had a son named Herakles
By Alcmene (most faithful of spouses
To Amphitryon, the king of Thebes)
When he seduced her under hypnosis
Hera sent the heebie-jeebies
To unhinge the young man’s senses
Causing him to kill his babies
And commit other sundry offences
The only way to lift this curse
The Delphic oracle avers
Is bind yourself to Eurystheus
And do his will for a dozen years
Eurystheus he set our hero
12 odd jobs, a fickle meld
And so our courageous caballero
Delved where demons and devils dwelled
'Strip the Nemean lion’s skin
And make from it a nice handbag
The Lernean hydra, please do in
Bring back alive the Arcadian stag
'Likewise the Erymanthian boar
The Augean stables need a good scrub
Rout the Stymphalian birds to ensure
They no longer look on humans as grub
'Capture for me the mad Cretan bull
And the man-eating mares of Diomedes
My daughter desires Hippolyta’s girdle
(She’s queen of those Amazon army ladies)
'Corral the red oxen of Geryones
Procure the gold apples of Hesperides
Find Cerberus on his pile of dead bones
And bring him unharmed back here from Hades'
Herakles performed all of these tasks
Many of which might stump us
And if anyone anytime ever asks
Was immortalised on Olympus
