Song for My 42nd Birthday
Today is my birthday and I’m 42
But I don’t feel a day above ten
And what I’d like to say is that I want to do
All the things that I wished to do then
Like play in the sand
With a spade in my hand
Building castles of wonder, imposingly grand
Each soft as a pillow for each time I land
As I cartwheel again and again
Today is my birthday, I’m twice 21
Will you give me two keys to the door?
As I travelled forward I needed just one
A return trip requires one more
I’d capture the joy
That I felt as a boy
When each passing moment became a new toy
And not just a tool that a man must employ
And find a productive use for
Today is my birthday, oh come hear me sing
And together we’ll send up a cheer
For the answer to ‘Life, the Universe and Everything’
Is mine for the whole of this year
So surely I’ll find
As my memories unwind
I can leave all my cumbersome baggage behind
And stride to the future with an uncluttered mind
No longer entangled in fear
On a path that is well lit and clear
