Genesis
Uranus married Gaea
To sire the Pantheonic layer
Producing offspring with unbridled zest
As they were son and mother
Precedent ensured all other
Gods and goddesses would dabble in incest
According to Uranus
A hundred hands was heinous
So he threw 3 of his sons into a pit
But another son (a Titan)
Challenged papa to a fight an’
Castrated him which must have hurt a bit
You would think that this would rather
Crimp his eagerness to father
Any more immortal progeny
But it’s still widely believed
That in the host later conceived
Was Aphrodite (sans her nightie) from the briny
Cronus was now the leader
And he knew that he would need a
Wife to help him found a dynasty
So he married sister Rhea
But then made a career
Out of snacking on his children before tea
Rhea was more than miffed
And finally she stiffed
Him by ringing in a stone for infant Zeus
Who was fostered down in Crete
By some demons who’d compete
With anything you’ve seen in Dr Seuss
When Zeus was fully grown
He’d no siblings of his own
So he married cousin Metis (who’d a parrot)
She gave pa-in-law a potion
Which induced a heaving motion
And his children re-emerged with bits of carrot
They were glad, and as a bonus
Helped Zeus to topple Cronus
And the Titans, against all of the odds
But after such incarceration
Wanted time for relaxation
And Zeus was left supremo of the gods
Zeus was jealous of his status
And said ‘No sons that hate us
Will survive and boast that we are dead’
So when Metis’s middle swelled
He ate her, but expelled
Fully grown and armed Athena from his head
Then Zeus realised his error
And married sister Hera
To keep the godly bloodlines approved
And though he had some kids with her
And their sister Demeter
He chased after anything in skirts that moved
