Alabama
I come from Alabama and I’ve travelled to the north
And I hope to be back home again before July the fourth
There’s an Alabama maiden on her mother’s front-porch swing
Who is smiling as she tots up all the presents I might bring
When they are all opened and she has assessed their worth
I hope that she will make me the most happy man on earth
“How dare you insult me with this pile of worthless trash”
And I can rush to savour Mother’s fried chicken and mash
I come from Alabama and every month or three
I have to dissuade some maiden who has designs on me
If I ever find a maiden with a plump and smiling mouth
I will keep her right beside me and we’ll travel to the south
